Under direction, installs, operates, maintains and keeps inventory of equipment and demonstrates and trains school staff and students on the proper use of audiovisual and TV equipment. The MST position functions as the: point person for multimedia at school/cluster/consortium activities, including sound, lighting, and radio and TV engineering for home school; facilitator of training for students and staff in the mechanics of media; facilitator for teachers and students in the effective use of instructional technology and equipment; technical and instructional support for media specialists and other instructional staff; technical and instructional support for electronic/broadcast media in studio spaces, auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria, and stadium; support for school administrator in the implementation of related multimedia requirements. |
This position requires knowledge of all seven core competencies of the supporting services professional growth system (SSPGS) to include commitment to students, knowledge of job, professionalism, interpersonal, communication, organization, and problem solving. Knowledge of multimedia productions encompassing the areas of radio, TV, cablecasting technology, audiovisual communications, auditorium, theatre production, video/filmmaking, lighting /sound systems, and computer applications related to presentations and video/audio editing. Knowledge of the construction, operation, and first line maintenance of audiovisual, theatre, radio and TV related equipment used in schools. Ability to work effectively with teachers, students and administrators
in providing technical assistance in the production of curriculum/instructional and multimedia materials. Aptitude for learning the technical characteristics and operation of new equipment. Knowledge to maintain and implement safe operational practices and procedures and to instruct staff and students in the safe operation of equipment and use of facilities. Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills required. |
| Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of an Associate’s Degree; considerable course work and/or combination of formal training in the areas of visual/fine arts, media production, radio/television, theater production or related field. Two years plus experience in electronic instructional equipment and multimedia program production and equipment operation, including audiovisual communications and theater production, with experience in an educational environment preferred. Experience may be substituted for the degree requirement if the experience is consistent with course work described above. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. |
| Possession of a valid Maryland Class
C driver's license or equivalent. |

Ability to move equipment weighing 50+ pounds, climb ladders, and work from high places. Ability to perform work requiring considerable walking, stair climbing, and moving equipment from room to room. |

Supports staff and students
- Collaborates with staff and students in the planning, staging, and execution of auditorium/theater productions.
- Assists teachers and students in the planning and producing of multimedia programs.
- Instructs staff and students on proper operation of multimedia equipment.
- Provides informational and consultant services related both to the development of curriculum materials and classroom media presentations.
- Assists teachers in the delivery of media oriented course work to students.
- Recommends media program and presentation techniques and equipment to staff and students.
- Works with staff to ensure proper storage and security of school media production equipment.
- Teams with professional staff to develop and produce school policy infomercials.
- Sets up and operates multimedia equipment and demonstrates its operation.
- Trains student crews in lighting, hookup of audio and video projection equipment, arrangement of special effects, safety standards, etc.
- Assists in coordinating elements of floor production during rehearsals and live presentations.
- Provides assistance to students, staff, and administrators in the preparation of multimedia and graphic materials.
Oversees multimedia activities
- Performs technical audiovisual and related instructional equipment services.
- Coordinates the engineering, programming, and production operations of school-based studio facilities.
- Consults with administration and staff for use of the auditorium regarding issues related to sound, lighting, safety, scheduling, etc.
- Converts program ideas and subject formats into media distributed programs and monitors production activities.
- Plans and designs studio settings, backgrounds, and equipment installations for current operations.
- Schedules off-air transmissions, directs videotape recordings, and rehearsals.
- Contributes to research and evaluation of new TV, radio, and theatre media software programs and recommends programs to administration and instructional staff.
- Sets up and operates instructional equipment systems for classroom activities or special assemblies.
- Prepares materials for original and graphic media productions.
- Advises administration and instructional staff of new multimedia ideas/programs/equipment.
- Administers and maintains offline computer systems e.g., editing stations, sound and light boards, etc.
- May serve as technical director for school based productions and auditorium assemblies.
Oversees and administers equipment
- Oversees the operation, storage, distribution, and maintenance of a wide variety of instructional equipment used in schools/cluster/consortium activities.
- Sets up and operates instructional equipment systems for classroom activities or special assemblies.
- Checks equipment in and out and maintains usage statistics and a current inventory of all school media production equipment.
- Creates, generates, and distributes user reports on equipment circulation, aging, and replacement requirements and reviews with school administrator.
- Orders and updates audiovisual related items and supplies with approval of a supervisor.
- Installs, operates, maintains, inspects, diagnoses, and troubleshoots instructional equipment in accordance with MCPS policies and procedures.
- Follows current MCPS Drama & Theater Safety Handbook policies and guidelines for safety rules and OSHA regulations; collaborates to develop and enforce safety standards for auditorium, TV studios, etc.
- Purchases job related supplies and equipment in consultation with appropriate stakeholders.
Summer Duties:
- Works in project teams to support system-wide initiatives and to provide multimedia assistance to summer school, staff development, and professional meetings.
- Maintains and school-based television studios through adjustments and repairs.
- Supports system-wide technology initiatives including the Technology Modernization Program.
- Assists with the installation and setup of multimedia, audiovisual, and similar systems in new and modernized schools.
- Works as part of a team to perform major preventive maintenance activities in school auditoriums, television studios, and similar multimedia production facilities.
Performs related work as required. |
