Bus Attendant (Special Education)

| Under close supervision, attends
to the physical and emotional needs of special education
students on school buses. Employees in this class are
responsible for the care and safety of students with disabilities
transported to and from their homes and schools. Nature
of work involves managing student behavior to provide
the driver freedom to operate the school bus safely by
creating a positive and safe transportation environment.
Bus attendants must exercise constant alertness to children’s
physical problems and to react promptly in the event of
seizures or other problems. Employees in this class must
also be knowledgeable of all students assigned to the
bus. Work is performed under the direction of a transportation
supervisor, or designated assistant, with required consultations
from special education teachers, administrators and bus
operators. |
| Knowledge of the field of child development with specific
applications to students with disabilities. Must be
able to operate the wheelchair lift. Considerable patience
and ability to assist the physically, mentally and emotionally
impaired students. Able to keep confidential student
information. Ability to assume responsibility for the
safety of students in the absence of the school bus
operator or if the bus operator is incapacitated. Must
have the ability to learn bus evacuation procedures.
Good human relations and communication skills.

| Completion of the ninth school grade and some experience
in the care of students with disabilities. Other combinations
of applicable education, training and experience which
provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary
to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Some ability to communicate in sign language desirable,
but not required, for some positions. |
| Certified in basic First Aid and CPR desirable, but
not required. |
| (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to assist
handicapped students on and off the bus, bodily lifting
students when required. Must be able to lift a minimum
of 50 lbs. Must bend and reach in awkward positions
at times to secure children and equipment. |

Works with student population with physical, sensory,
emotional or learning disabilities.
Escorts students on and off the bus and aids them physically.
Is able to lift students for emergency bus evacuation.
Must be on the bus at the appropriate time to check
equipment and leave on time.
Assigns students to seats and adjusts safety straps
and other restraints.
Properly secures students in various types of equipment.
Observes and responds to students with seizures, other
medical conditions, behavior changes and any other unusual
conditions on the bus and implements behavior controls
when necessary.
Assists a substitute bus operator with directions.
Performs bus attendant pre-trip inspection of special
equipment.
Completes daily attendance reports in the Bus Attendant
Blue Book.
Gathers and maintains confidential student medical
data sheets.
Keeps required equipment clean and in good working
order.
Treats all students and others with respect and compassion.
Deals in an effective and tactful manner with emotionally
impaired students. Assists the bus operator in performing
bus evacuation drills.
Is calm in an emergency situation and efficiently and
quickly evacuates students when needed.
Performs related work as required.
