Substitute Teacher Information

Substitute teaching is an excellent way to learn about our schools while allowing principals and teachers to get to know you. To qualify as a substitute teacher, you need a college degree, but do not need formal teacher training.

An automated substitute calling system helps you manage your work schedule by allowing you to call at any time, day or night, to find jobs. This system is telephone and internet accessible. The system uses your subject area and location preferences to offer you jobs on the days you have selected and for previously accepted assignments.

Substitute Teacher Rates: Daily rate of pay $114.54- Long Term rate $153.97.

If you hold a valid Maryland professional eligibility certificate or standard or advanced professional certificate, the daily rate of pay is $117.17--Long Term rate $157.51. In order to qualify for this higher rate of pay, you must submit a copy of your valid Maryland certificate. It will be your responsibility to submit a renewed Maryland certificate when your current certificate expires. Otherwise, your rate of pay will be reduced to a non-certified substitute rate.

Reference forms are required from your most recent principal(s) or your cooperating teachers and supervising professor. MCPS reference forms are to be forwarded by you to the persons you list as references. If you do not have teacher training or experience, submit references from supervisors of your most recent employment. References from colleagues cannot be accepted; the individual must have observed your performance in a supervisory capacity. If your credentials are on file with a college placement bureau, you may have them forwarded to this office in addition to MCPS references.

When your file is complete with resume, references, valid Maryland Professional certificate (if applicable), and transcripts, it will be reviewed by a personnel specialist who will notify you of the status of your application. To check on the status of your application, please call 301-279-3855 between 8:30am - 10:30am.

Any applicant working without prior authorization from the Office of Human Resources will not be eligible for payment.
