HUMAN RESOURCES > CERTIFICATION > ADDING NEW ENDORSEMENTS TO CERTIFICATE

Options and Information About Adding Additional Certification Areas to your Maryland Teaching Certificate

1) Adding New Endorsements to Your Teaching Certificate Via Content Option
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has adopted a new content allowance, which is available only to those with a valid Maryland certificate including a teaching endorsement (e.g., elementary, special education, art, etc.).  The course work must be content course work through a regionally accredited college or university.  Information about specific areas is as follows:

  • For elementary or early childhood education: Obtain 30 credits distributed across the four content areas of English, social studies, math, and science, with at least 6 credits in each content area.
  • For social studies: Obtains 30 credits with a minimum of at least 3 credits each in history, geography, political science, and economics, with the remaining in related social studies content.
  • For secondary or Pre-K-grade 12 (e.g., Art PK-12) education: Obtains 30 credits at least 15 of which are in the area for which the new certification is sought and 15 of which are in content-related areas.
  • For special education: Obtains 30 credits of which at least 15 credits are in the age-appropriate area of special education and 15 are in related areas.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are submitting official coursework and wish to have an endorsement (subject area) added to your certificate, please include a note requesting that your file be reviewed for that purpose.

Please click here to view Evaluation for Adding a New Certification Area form.

2) Adding New Endorsements to Your Teaching Certificate Via Testing Option
Based on a testing allowance by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), a certified teacher can add a new certification area or endorsement by passing the applicable subject area assessment or specialty test. A copy of the passing score along with a written request to add the new endorsement must be submitted to the Certification Unit for processing.

Please click here to view Praxis and ACTFL Testing information.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When submitting passing Praxis Test scores, please make a COPY of only the first two pages of your original score sheet(s) and submit the COPY to our office. RETAIN THE ORIGINAL FOR YOUR RECORDS AND FUTURE REFERENCE. Please do not black out any information on the score sheets.

For more information, please contact the Certification Unit at 301-279-3112 or email Sandy Sengstack, Certification Coordinator, at Sandra Sengstack@mcpsmd.org.
