MCPS teachers considering online teaching need to meet or exceed the requirements set by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and MCPS. In addition to these requirements, teachers must be able to effectively communicate in an online environment with students, parents, and MCPS staff. Online teachers use a variety of online communication tools, such as e-mail, chat sessions, and discussion boards. Communicating course content using these tools, implementing a variety of teaching methods in an online environment, and providing prompt feedback to students are important aspects of online teaching.
MSDE has established qualification standards for online teachers. The MCPS Student eLearning office follows MSDE's requirements for online teachers when considering applications. The MCPS application (below) requires certification in the content area.
To apply for a position as an online teacher for MCPS, fill out the application and return it to the Student eLearning office.

MSDE Qualifications for Online Teachers
MSDE does not issue a certificate for online teaching. In an online course, the facilitator (teacher) is removed by distance from the learners and 80% or more of the course activities occur online. A course that is offered face-to-face and utilizes online resources less than 80% of the time is a hybrid course.
Teachers for Student Online Courses
Teachers for online student courses must meet or exceed the following three criteria:
Highly qualified, with current certification for the content they are to teach and at least 2 years of satisfactory experience teaching it (or comparable expertise and experience teaching the content at the post-secondary level);
Satisfactory completion of MSDE’s three-credit online course Online Teaching in MD (CPD #09-00-05) or a similar course recognized by MSDE, including:
- Fundamentals of Virtual K-12 Teaching (CPD #13-66-14), offered by MPT
- Tech 522: Online Facilitator Training: Mastering the Skills of Online Teaching
- Tech 570: Fundamentals of Virtual K-12 Teaching, offered by PBS Teacherline
- CPD-approved courses in online facilitation offered by a Maryland local school system (LSS)
(NOTE: The prerequisites for taking Online Teaching in MD are meeting the criteria in #1 above and successful completion of at least one online course carrying 2 or more credits); and
Complete an MSDE shadowing experience. Sign-up for a shadowing experience by e-mailing email@example.com. The cost to shadow will be $250 plus the 3% bank processing fee.
MSDE does not hire teachers for online student courses; this responsibility rests with local school systems. MCPS follows the above requirements to help ensure quality instruction for online students.
