Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Student eLearning

Check our FAQ, below, for answers to many commonly asked questions about eLearning.

When does my class meet and when do I work in an online course?
Class times are flexible, but students need to complete assignments approximately every day. There may be some face-to-face class sessions and attendance is required. All other work may be done at times convenient to the student. Students who do not attend the required face-to-face sessions will not receive credit for the course.

How is an online class different from one at a traditional classroom setting?
Online courses use the same curriculum and learning outcomes as the courses taught in school. They are designed to take advantage of the online format. Most class work may be done from home. Students who are most successful with online courses have good time management skills and are self-motivated.

Will I get a grade and course credit?
The same grading and credit policies apply to an online course as to courses offered in school.

Who will be teaching the class?
All classes are taught by highly qualified teachers who have been trained to teach in an online environment.

Are the scheduled face to face sessions mandatory?

Yes, attendance is mandatory.  Students cannot receive credit if they are unable to attend one of the face to face sessions.  If a student’s schedule will not allow him/her to attend all of the face to face sessions, the student should not enroll in the section.

Can I attend a face to face session for a different section?

No, students must attend the scheduled face to face sessions for the section in which they are enrolled.  We are unable to make arrangements for students to attend face to face sessions for other class sections.

What happens at a face to face session?
The exact agenda depends on the course and the session, but important content is covered in each session.  Examples of activities in face to face sessions:

    • Exams
    • Organizing group projects
    • Covering key curriculum concepts
    • Creating hand-on projects
    • Discussing course requirements and processes
    • Introducing the online environment

How much time will I need to spend on the online course?

Because the curriculum is compacted in an online course, students should plan to spend four to five hours per day to complete assignments.

Do I need to be online at prescribed times during the course?

Students need to complete assignments approximately every day.  The online work may be done at times convenient to the student.  Students are not required to be online at specific times, but all deadlines are expected to be met.

Can I work ahead in the course?

Typically, there are opportunities for a student to work ahead.  If you want to complete work in advance of the class schedule, communicate with your instructor to develop a plan.

The Foundations of Technology course covers a full year of content, but can I just take A or B online?

Yes, a student can enroll for only FOT A or FOT B.  If you only enroll in FOT B, you still must attend the safety meeting in first face to face session.

Will I get new login for the course?

Students will access the online course through the system used for the registration process (PDO).  As a result, students will use the login created during the registration process.

What is the course refund policy?

A full refund will be issued if a student withdraws no later than two days after the start of the section.

What if I need help with course content?
Instructors will have "office hours" when they can be reached by phone or online.

What is the cost for an online course?

The tuition for an online course is $310 per half credit (subject to change each year) for MCPS Health and Foundations of Technology online courses. MVS courses cost $350 per half credit. Tuition assistance is available, based upon financial need. Contact our office for more information.

When am I eligible to to enroll in the online courses?

For Health and Wellness, students are eligible to enroll in the course in the summer before 10th grade until the summer following 12th grade. For Foundations of Technology, students are eligible to enroll in the course in the summer before 9th grade until the summer following 12th grade.

How do I enroll in an online course?
Enrollment information and an online enrollment form is available on our web site. All enrollments for online courses must follow the process and complete the form as shown on our Enrollment page.

What computer hardware and software do I need to be able to take an online course?

Hardware: Any MAC or PC computer running Windows XP (or higher) or MAC OS 10 (or higher) can access our online course content. Students need a reliable Internet connection, but high speed is not required. Ipad's and Ipod's are still not capable of playing flash content so neither of these technologies can be used for the online course at this time.
Software: The latest version of Internet Explorer or the latest version of Firefox (preferred browser) browsers with Flash player installed will be needed to access course content. Students need a Word processing program that can save to Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) to open and submit assignments.
