Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month ~ celebrated September 15 to October 15 each year ~ honors the diverse peoples of Spanish-speaking backgrounds who have come to the United States from more than 20 countries. The theme for this year's celebration is Children: Our Hope for the Future.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanic Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the country. Between 1990 and 1999, the Hispanic population grew to 31.3 million - an increase of almost 40%! The Hispanic population in the United States represents approximately ten percent of the total!

The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month provides a great opportunity to encourage and develop "ethnic literacy" and foster pride in one's own culture and a respect and appreciation for the uniqueness of others. It is a time to learn about the roots of Hispanic heritage in America through the important history-making discoveries, events, and people.
