Bookmarks to Celebrate and Research Our Asian/Pacific American Heritage
These bookmarks will provide background information for parents, teachers and some secondary students. We are looking for web sites that celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month on an elementary student level. If you know of any, call the Office of Instruction & Program Development.

These activities and lessons are intended for teacher instruction. Adult supervision is recommended. As with all internet activities, teachers are encouraged to preview websites before using them with students.

Activities for Grades K - 5

Artifacts Lesson Plan - Students learn that articles used by a culture reveal much about life and people's values.
Create A Japanese Crest - Students discover and develop their family crest.
Ask Asia - A special site that addresses many issues from educational activities to the continent Asia.
Asian Map Puzzle - Students learn the countries and capitals of Asia. They put countries in the right locations on a map of Asia.
Daruma Toys and Games - Find out about daruma, Japan's best-known folk toy.
Chinese New Year Lantern Making - Students learn about Chinese New Year or Spring Festival and do lantern, paper cut and scroll activities related to the celebration of Chinese New Year.
Famous Person: Yushiko Uchida - Learn the Japanese Folktale of Uchida.
Subtopic: Tet, the Vietnamese New Year - Learn the history of this holiday.
Where we Come From - Children will explore their family heritage.

Activities for Grades 6 - 8

Discovery School.Com Asia and Other Cultures - Find out how Asian cultures celebrate many festivals.
Songs in Japanese - Students will become familiar with the sound of Japanese by singing familiar songs in Japanese.
The Constitution of Japan - Students can review the historical background of Japan's constitution.
Artifacts Activity: What Am I? - Students will practice simple Japanese expressions and explore the information available from artifacts.
Education in Two Cultures: A Day in the Life - Students learn about their peers in other countries / cross-cultural understanding.
Chinese Culture Through Cinderella - Teachings about East Asia.
National Anthem of Japan - The student will learn the origin, lyrics and melody of the Japanese national anthem and compare it to our national anthem.
Create A Japanese Crest

Activities for Grades 9 - 12

Cultural Spaces - Many students assume only their cultural and traditional practices are worldly accepted and practiced. The primary purpose of this activity is to place the process and traditional practices.
Our Architectural Heritage - From this lesson student will be able to demonstrate awareness of historical architectural characteristics and analyze building styles & materials in regard to geographical location.
From Sea to Shining Sea - Students are engaged in a study of the colonization and westward expansion of the United States; noting the impact of the westward migration upon the lifestyle(s) of Native Americans, and upon the natural environment(s).
How East Asia Became an Economic Power - Students learn of East Asian culture.
Six Paths to China - A lesson to help integrate the World Wide Web into classroom learning.
Appreciating Our American Heritage - Lesson to teach the students about the Chinese culture and how important they feel their heritage and culture are, and to help the American students develop a pride in their own culture as well.
The Constitution of Japan - Students can review the historical background of Japan's constitution.
