Volunteer for Interages - Connect the generations! (8/07/08)
Help boost a child’s skills and self-esteem! Interages, Inc., a nonprofit in
Montgomery County, needs volunteers (ages 50+) to tutor and mentor
children at public elementary schools throughout Montgomery County.
Choose from a variety of programs, from doing fun geography projects with
kids to helping immigrant children with their language and transition into
American culture!
In 1-2 hours/week, you can make a real difference in the life of a child.
Volunteers provide friendship, encouragement, and may help with reading,
language, geography skills, and cultural activities. Training, all materials,
on-site staff support provided.

Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) (8/07/08)
- Literacy Tutors - The Literacy Council of Montgomery County has over 200 adult students
on its waiting list for tutors. Become a volunteer literacy tutor and teach an adult to read, write, or
speak English. No foreign language skills are necessary. Tutors work one-on-one or with small
groups, and typically meet with students in libraries or communit y centers at mutually convenient
times. Tutor orientations will be held at the Rockville Library on:
- September 3 from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm and
- September 8 from 10:30 am to noon **Sessions are also scheduled for
October 2nd, October 6th, October 29th, and November 4th.

- ESL Class Teacher Aide - We are also currently looking for volunteer teacher aides to work with a lead teacher to conduct an ESL class for adults of various levels. The class session will be 10 weeks long, equivalent to 90 instructional hours. Volunteers will be trained and oriented before the first day of class and be invited to participate in trainings and faculty meetings to develop and adjust curriculum and to report student status.

- Reading and Mathematics Instructional Volunteers - We are seeking instructional volunteers to tutor learners at pre-GED levels in reading and/or math. The GED-i online course was developed as a flexible means for learners to prepare for the series of GED examinations and earn a Maryland State high school diploma. Interested students must be able to demonstrate minimum 9th grade skills by pre-testing in math and reading. Volunteers will provide instruction to those learners who need modest academic support in order to qualify for the Maryland State Department of Education’s GED-i course.

- Short-Term Volunteer Opportunity with Adult Learners - We are seeking Student Support Aides for the adult ESL Class Program to assist with student orientations and retention activities. Hours will vary during the course of the term but are expected to average 3 hours per week (more hours needed at the beginning and end of the class session). Daytime student orientations and classes are slated for the Silver Spring and Quince Orchard public libraries. Student orientations and classes are scheduled in the evenings at Rockville High School and Clopper Mill Elementary School in Germantown. Classes will meet three times per week over a 10-week period.
