Gently Used Books
The purpose of the Books Project is to collect books that children have outgrown and redistribute them to the children enrolled in the Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) program so that those students can begin building their own personal libraries.
The project started in July, 2003, when Dr. Weast, superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), asked the Montgomery County Public Schools Retirees Association (MCPSRA) Executive Board to participate in helping to collect no-longer-needed children’s books to benefit MCPS students attending Title I schools. The books are made available to students attending voluntary summer school programs.
2006 Projects
Youngsters, parents or grandparents with gently used books that have been outgrown by their owners are invited to donate them to Title I students. The collected books will be given in July to students attending the Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) program.
Gently used and new books for the summer distribution will be collected at all MCPS high schools in March 2006. Watch this page for more information.
Past Projects
In 2004 the first Gently Used Books project was completed. More than 6,000 books were collected and about 5,200 usable books were packed into 70 cartons for distribution to 18 schools. Books were distributed to students in grades one through five. In 2005 the project was successfully repeated with the distribution of more than 6000 books.
