Toolkit Project
The purpose of the Toolkit Project is to provide the families of kindergarten students attending Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) with materials to be used at home to practice skills to build early reading and math concepts. Parents are given directions (provided in English, Vietnamese and Spanish) for the appropriate use of the materials. Parents of school-aged children can use the materials included in the toolkit to develop skills for working with kids at home.
The project started in July, 2003, when Dr. Weast, superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), asked the Montgomery County Public Schools Retirees Association (MCPSRA) Executive Board to participate creating the toolkits to benefit MCPS students attending Title I schools.
2006 Projects
Dr. Weast has again asked MCPSRA to continue the Toolkit project for the summer of 2006. For the 2006 SAIL program 21 schools will be served. This will mean an increase in the number of Toolkits that will be required for kindergarten students.
- In 2005 the cost of each Toolkit was $8.31 for 934 Toolkits.
- In 2006 costs are expected to approach $10 per kit for an estimated 1000 kits this year.
A partnership with the MCPS Education Foundation has been established to facilitate fund raising for the Toolkits project. This partnership provides donors the ability to claim the donation as a tax deduction.
MCPSRA and the MCPS Education Foundation are seeking donors, large and small, to fund this years’ Toolkits project.
Donations may be sent to:
MCPSRA Books and Toolkits Project, room 250

Checks should be made out to the MCPS Education Foundation and should include this notation on the memo line: MCPSRA Books and Toolkits Project.
Past Projects
In 2004 the first Toolkit project was completed. 867 toolkits were given to kindergarten students and their families. In 2005 the project was successfully repeated with the distribution of 934 toolkits.
