Adult Basic Literacy Coordinator

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County, MD is seeking a part-time Coordinator to manage our Basic Literacy tutoring program. The Basic Literacy program serves adults who want to learn to read and write, including those with learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, and mild mental retardation. Your background should, therefore, include experience working with such individuals in an educational setting.
In this position, you will interview and assess prospective students; match them with trained volunteer tutors; advise tutors on instructional strategies; and provide general support of the tutoring process.
Responsibilities include:
- Recruit, interview and assess adult Basic Literacy students
- Match volunteer tutors with students and support the tutoring process
- Manage database records
- Coordinate supplementary materials, training, and tools for teaching students with learning disabilities
- Establish and maintain relationships with outside agencies for student referrals
Qualifications required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field
- Experience working with people with cognitive disabilities, e.g., attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, mild mental retardation
- Strong computer and internet skills (MS office, database helpful)
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and organization skills
- Detail oriented
Hours: 30 hours per week (schedule negotiable). Pay rate: $13/hour. Company-paid parking. Job may move to full time in future.
