Combination - Grades 3 & 4 Science Unit Descriptions

Rocks and Minerals (RAM)
Children investigate rocks and minerals, exploring the similarities and differences among rocks as well as how rocks and minerals are both similar and different. They conduct several tests on minerals and develop a systematic way to record their observations. These activities introduce students to the way geologists study rocks and minerals. They also help students develop and apply process skills in observing, describing, and recording. This unit is part of the Science and Technology for Children series developed by the National Science Resources Center, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences.

The Pillbug Project (PIP)
This unit involves students in investigative design through the study of isopods, commonly called "pillbugs" or "potato bugs". Children study the organisms in their natural habitat, speculate on their environmental needs, then design investigations to test their theories about the conditions that isopods need to live. Children learn to develop their own record-keeping system and to provide evidence to support their conclusions. This unit was developed and published by the National Science Teachers Association.

Chemical Tests (CHT)
In this unit, children use critical thinking skills to solve mysteries such as "What are the identities of five unknown solids?" Students learn about physical and chemical properties and how to describe them, and changes that occur when different solids and liquids are mixed together or separated. Students are introduced to solubility, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, and acids, bases, and neutrals. This unit is part of the Science and Technology for Children series developed by the National Science Resources Center, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences.
