Combination - Grades 1 & 2 Science Unit Descriptions
Organisms (ORG)
Children observe and investigate plants and animals as living organisms using formal observation and record keeping. They study the stages of plant growth in both terrestrial and aquatic plants. Then students introduce animals to the ecosystem they have nurtured and observe the interaction of plants with animals as well as animals with animals. This unit is part of the Science and Technology for Children series developed by the National Science Resources Center, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences.
Light, Color, and Shadows (LCS)
The characteristics of light are explored by children as they examine shadows, reflection, color changes, color mixing, and refraction of light into the spectrum of visible colors. Included are opportunities for children to apply the knowledge they have gained to new situations and challenges. This unit is part of the Windows on Beginning Science series developed by Creative Publications.
Water and Ice (WAI)
Children learn about liquids, non-liquids, and substances that act like liquids but are not. The effects of changing temperature on water as it goes from solid to liquid and back again are explored. Children also explore other liquids including oil and soap and compare these to water. This unit is part of the Windows on Beginning Science series developed by Creative Publications.
