- Quizmaster Challenge is an annual academic quiz tournament for high school students (grades 9-12) set up in a single elimination format. The program is aired five times per week on MCPS TV channel 34.
- 2011-2012 season shows will be taped during the period from January through April.
- Each competition (match) involves two teams of four students each.
- Each team may have an alternate player. Alternates may enter at the beginning of a game. Once a game has begun, alternates may be substituted only during a break and only due to an existing player's illness or other physical inability to play.
- The game is played in a series of four (4) rounds.
- Points are given for correct responses to questions. Questions will not be repeated unless a team responds before the question is completed and their answer is incorrect, the question will be repeated for the other team.
- Questions may not be recorded, electronically or otherwise.
- The judge has the authority to interrupt a match during taping to correct a mistake that has been made.
- It is at the host's discretion to ask for clarification or a ruling from the judges.
- The decision of the judge is final.
- Game questions include the following subjects: Arts (film history, theater history, music history), Education, Geography (American, World), History & Culture (American, British, Japanese, World, Histories of journalism, politics, pop culture, science), Literature, Math (Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry), Mythology, Philosophy & Religion, Science (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth, Human biology, physical, physics).
- Game questions are written by a panel of experts, including current and former MCPS teachers.
- Pronunciations do not have to be exact. A plausible or phonetic pronunciation is usually acceptable, unless it demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about the correct answer.
- If a player from a team that has not buzzed in answers a question, the answer does not count, even if the given answer is correct. No points will be deducted. The team that did buzz in will be allowed to answer.
- Taping may be interrupted due to technical reasons.
- If a participant, or advisor feels that there has been a breach in the rules—it must be brought to the attention of the judge—not parents, students, host, or audience members.
- A buzzer check will be made at the beginning of taping. If a buzzer stops working during play, the team should notify the host immediately.
- Teams are expected to be familiar with the rules prior to competition.
