Parents are updated and informed on important school system issues
in English and multiple foreign languages.
The participatory style of communication typically found between
parents and children in the United States may be
alien to some immigrant parents. Children raised in these households
are caught between two cultures: a traditional
world where they are expected to follow the rules and be totally
compliant, and an American culture where they are
expected to participate, be assertive, and learn to communicate
openly. This month's Our Schools Today explores
these topics.

Spark Matsunaga Elementary School in Germantown, Maryland, is the
first Montgomery County public school
named for an Asian American. The son of Japanese immigrants, Matsunaga
was known for his bravery in World War II, a passion for peacemaking,
working tirelessly for education and people with disabilities, and
a love of poetry. A
U.S. senator from Hawaii, Matsunaga lived with his family in Kensington,
Maryland, for over 25 years.
