Capture your student's interest with a scenario-based lesson for the separation of mixtures. This lab activity is not new for biology students but can be used in a chemistry class to reinforce the concepts of pH, equilibrium, indicators, acid-base balance, buffer solutions, oxidation/reduction and separation of mixtures in a compound. The activities can be separated into four days or condensed into two days depending on the level of your students. All of the materials can be ordered from the MCPS equipment loan program at the DNA Resource center at Wootton High School. This lesson was prepared by Dr. Mei Wang, at Walter Johnson High School for her teacher workshop as part of the HHI second summer employment at NIH. Please feel free to use the lesson.
