Welcome to the Student Academy of Science
(SAS) web site. This extracurricular program
-- funded by the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute (HHMI) -- is designed to
excite middle and high school students
about biomedical sciences as a field of
study and career. The objectives of
the Student Academy of Science are:
- Stimulate student
interest in career opportunities
in biomedical research through
program visits to laboratories, presentations
by scientists, discussions, videos,
and other extracurricular activities.
- Assist students who
are preparing application for science
internships and other career explorations
activities.
- Provide mentors
to students who are trying to improve
their academic performance in science.
- Give students experience
using career information resources
and planning their educational careers.
Participating teachers are expected
to develop and implement a management
plan for the program. Sponsors are
responsible for:
- Recruiting students,
particularly form populations traditionally
underrepresented in the biomedical
research sciences
- Meeting regularly
with their chapter members;
- Developing a mentoring
program; counseling students;
- Meeting periodically
with other academy sponsors
- Preparing an end
of semester report.
Participating teacher sponsors receive a stipend for 32
hours per semester devoted to the activity for the school year.
Two teachers may share a stipend. Additional funds for instructional
materials are available to support SAS chapter activities.
To apply, a requesting teacher with the approval of the
school principal should complete the application. Questions should be referred to Mrs. Sandra Shmookler via email at sandra_shmookler@mcpsmd.org
