Emily Kanes increases writing motivation and output

Emily Kanes

4th grade teacher, Emily Kanes, came up with a low-tech strategy that improved the motivation and increased the writing output for her students.

Post it bucks store

After reading about the Sticky notes strategy (40K pdf) to help kids organize their writing, Emily Kanes came up with her own plan for increasing motivation and writing output for her students.

“In order to improve student learning in my class we started a “Writing Bucks” motivational procedure. The students have struggled in the past with writing open ended and inferential written passages. This has been a challenge with both creative and informative writing. In order to motivate the kids we started giving sentence starters, written on sticky notes, to get them going. As soon as they completed the written passage I signed each sticky note and the students filed them away in their “wallets”. As soon as they collected five or ten “bucks,” as we call them, they were able to buy something from the store, such as time with me, a treat, or computer time. Before this, students were not able to write independently. After we started this process the kids became better at writing independently and getting started on their own. Because they have seen the sentence starters so many times they are slowly becoming able to sit and write with no prompting at all. It’s a fun way to get kids motivated to write on their own.”
