chalkboard with E-TIPS RemodeledExciting changes are
coming to E-TIPS!

The mission of E-TIPS continues to focus on building the capacity of all MCPS teachers and staff to use technology effectively. MCPS staff can still become an “E-TIPS Educator” by attending workshops, implementing UDL and technology strategies with students and acquiring a total of 75 hours. The remodeled E-TIPS provides recognition to school leaders who go beyond their own professional growth to support the advancement of others through training, coaching, and sharing exemplary curriculum materials.  “E-TIPS Leaders” must earn 10 points during the course of school year to earn recognition.  Detailed information on the leadership activities will be posted on the HIAT website.

Making decisions about reading accommodations should be a thoughtful and data driven process. And yes, there is a tool that can help guide your decision making and it is free! The Protocol for Reading Accommodations, PAR, “helps you determine the most suitable reading free Par buttonaccommodations for specific students by assessing their individual needs.  Anyone on the IEP team can administer PAR to systematize how reading accommodations are recommended on a student level or across the school district.”

Forest Knolls, Great Seneca, and Sargen ShriverUDL ES Project 2012

Three MCPS elementary schools, Forest Knolls, Sargent Shriver and Great Seneca Creek, participated in the Universal Design for Learning Pilot Project during the 2011 -2012 school year.  A total of 29 staff members from the three schools joined their school’s UDL leadership teams.   As part of their professional development, members of the UDL Teams participated in a 3 credit CPD, online class, “SA 94 – Effective Coaching for Instructional Technology Integration.” Teachers opened their classrooms for observation of the implementation of UDL principles. Several positive trends were noted during UDL walk-throughs including: “high and low tech options", “evidence of planning and preparation”, “student’s autonomy”, “spontaneous student discourse” and more.

Moving beyond their classrooms, these remarkable team members provided a professional development and coaching to their school community. Numerous video examples of UDL in action are available for viewing on the HIAT website.

Schools interested in replicating some of the elements of the UDL Projects can use the resources on our new UDL web page. These resources were created as result of the work of the UDL Leadership Teams at six schools since 2010.
