Guest Speaker

Justin Valenti, an 8th grader at Lakelands Park Middle School was the guest speaker at the 3th Annual E-TIPS Event. Using Assistive Technology is a part of Justin's life.  As early as first grade Justin was using a computer and by 4th and 5th grade was using Draft:Builder, Write:Outloud, and Read:Outloud for writing and reading assignments. Thanks to a laptop in middle school, Justin has made significant progress using Outlook, MS Word, PowerPoint, Clipart, and Glogster for communicating with his teachers and completing assignments.

E-TIPS stands for "Educators using Technology to Improve the Performance of Students." E-TIPS Leaders have completed 75 hours of E-TIPS training demonstrating a personal commitment to improving their own technology skills, assisting their colleagues with technology, and using technology effectively to benefit students.

E-TIPS events give educators an opportunity to network. Matt Monjan gave a presentation on Discovery Education. Software vendors provided valuable doorprizes which were raffled off at the event. HIAT announced new ways that MCPS staff can earn E-TIPS hours including taking online courses, teaching E-TIPS classes, and participating in the creation of accessible curriculum materials.

E-TIPS classes are currently offered by HIAT, InterACT, the Technology Consulting Team, the Office of Supporting Services, and the Staff Development Programs Team.
