Very well-designed site with hundreds of short stories to browse or search. The stories can be rated by readers and there is a discussion forum in which you or students can post thoughts about the stories online.

Giggle Poetry
Has poems that kids can read and rate. Also has links to poetry lessons on how to write different kinds of poems. Material is copyrighted and not for copying or distribution. Poetry theater selections are also included with permission to copy for classroom use.

TweenTribune is free and jam packed with current news stories that are chosen by site coordinators from the Associated Press for the "tween" (age 8-14) audience. Middle school audiences will find the articles easy to read and relate to. The site is easy to navigate with a subject indexed toolbar and it is searchable. This search engine is similar to Ask Jeeves but uses different data bases for the results.

Subscription Websites:

Some of the websites listed require a paid subscription. MCPS holds a subscription for all sites listed on this page, except where noted. If you are an MCPS teacher, you can obtain login and password information from your school media specialist. In some cases, you will not need to log in at all if you are using an MCPS computer. See other websites to which MCPS holds a subscription.
