20th Anniversary Gala

The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. marked its 20th anniversary with a Gala Celebration on October 17, 2006 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.  The event was attended by over 320 friends and partners of the Learning Academy.

The first Friends of Education Awards were presented during the evening’s program to five community leaders who have made education a priority in the County.  Award recipients were Douglas M. Duncan, Montgomery County Executive; Charlene R. Nunley, CEO of Montgomery College; Marilyn J. Praisner, Montgomery County Councilmember; Michael L. Subin, Montgomery County Councilmember; and Jerry D. Weast, Superintendent of Schools.

The Friends of Education Award was also presented to a very special group—the GBTLA Pioneers.  These thirty-five individuals played a key role in the establishment of the Saturday School in 1984 and many are still involved with the Learning Academy today.  More than half of the Pioneers were in attendance at the Gala.

The GBTLA would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended the event and who has supported the Learning Academy over the past 20 years.
