The Division of Food and Nutrition Services provides meals for senior citizen nutrition sites operated by the Department of Health & Human Services, Aging and Disability Services, Montgomery County government. Food is prepared at Neelsville Middle School and Takoma Park Elementary School and delivered to nutrition sites by refrigerated trucks. The style of meal service at each site varies and can range from hot meals served cafeteria style to pre-plated or boxed meals.
Menus are planned to meet Department of Aging and Title VII United States Department of Agriculture recommendations which include 3 ounces protein, 1 serving vegetable, 1 serving fruit, 1 serving complex carbohydrate, 1 cup low fat dairy serving, and rich sources of vitamin A and C while averaging less than 30% of the calories from fat and 1000 milligrams sodium per meal. Registered dietitians on the staff of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services and the Department Aging oversee menu planning.
