Achievement Series Frequently Asked Questions:

Accessing Algebra 1 and English 9 & 10 Weighted Final Exam Scores in IMS

1 -Must students write their answers in the grid-in boxes before bubbling in the answer? (Math only)

Students do not need to print their SPR (grid-in) answers in the boxes provided. However, doing so may help them bubble correctly and avoid mistakes.

2 - Will we check for errors on the scan sheets?
Teachers should remind students to check their answer sheets before handing in their tests. Student responses will be scored by the scanner.

3 - Can teachers fix errors in students grid-in answers? (Math only)

No, teachers must scan the students grid-in answers without altering them.

4 - Can we save paper and copy only a few tests and one BCR/ECR sheet per student?

No, each student should receive a complete test and be able to write on the test.

5 - Is there another form of the Algebra unit assessment and are there assessments for reteach/retake?

For the 2006-2007 school year, there is only one form of the Algebra 1 Unit Assessments. Assessments that end an instructional unit or period of study may not be reassessed according to the grading and reporting guidelines effective July 1, 2006.

6 - Can we use more than one class period to administer Algebra unit assessments?

The state allows 1.5 minutes for an SR item, 2 minutes for an SPR item, 5 minutes for a BCR item, and 10 minutes for an ECR item. The MCPS assessments were designed with these times in mind and should be completed in 43 minutes.

7 - How can we give immediate feedback to students?

IMS reports will be available 24 to 48 hours after scanning answer sheets. Do not use the "Print Student Reports" feature of the Achievement Series. The printed report includes a list of the correct answers for the assessment, therefore jeopardizing security. Since Achievement Series does not weigh the BCR/ECR portion of the assessments, the final weighted percentage for each student is inaccurate. Use the IMS system for individual reports.

8 - If a student earns less than 50% on a unit test, will IMS report the weighted score or will it report 50%, the minimum score under MCPS guidelines?

The IMS report will indicate the weighted score the student earned.

9 - Do students have to use pencils for the scan sheet?

It is strongly recommended that students use #2 pencils to complete the answer sheet. The scanner will read marks from pens. However, students will not be able to erase and correct answers without pencils. Only one answer sheet per student will be printed.

10 - Under what conditions can teachers go over the Algebra unit assessments with students?

Teachers may return tests to review the problems in class. Tests and answer sheets must be returned at the end of class. Test materials may not be sent home with the students.
