Tip of the Month

Is It Lie or Lay?

Many of us struggle with how and when to use the verbs lie and lay. Here is a quick reference to help keep you grammatically correct when using these words:
Lie—the action of reclining
Example: The preschoolers lie down for a nap in the afternoon.

Lay—always followed by a noun or pronoun. You lay something somewhere.
Example: I lay the newspaper on her desk every morning.

BUT, lay is also the past tense of lie.
Example: I lay down for a nap all afternoon yesterday.

Be a good neighbor—talk about and share this with your colleagues and friends. Sharing will help you remember the tip. Send us your comments and ideas.

Reconsideration of New Rule in the MCPS Editorial Stylebook
Please update the information at the bottom of the first column on page 1 of your copy of the 2011 edition of the MCPS Editorial Stylebook with the following information:

Academic titles and honors that follow a name are usually lowercased in general use; abbreviations are capitalized.
Examples:
John M. Smith, doctor of law
Judith Fong, B.A.,
Melanie Smith, Ed.D.
Phillip Jones, M.D.
Carmen Alvarez, J.D.

These designations are offset by commas in a sentence when they follow a personal name.
Example:
Carmen Alvarez, J.D., will be our keynote speaker.
