What is the “Big Picture” you need to know about the work in MCPS that guides our strategic plan?
Our Call To Action: Pursuit of Excellence is the strategic plan for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). This document contains the core values, mission, vision, system goals, and academic priorities. It is vital that each administrator is thoroughly conversant with the components of this document
What are the system initiatives that guide our work?
MCPS uses the Framework for Teaching and Learning as the cornerstone of its initiatives. This framework is supported by other key initiatives. Grading and Reporting based on clear standards is a critical focus. Using the Baldrige process and quality tools to develop, implement, and monitor the school improvement process and office improvement processes is an important methodology for continuous improvement. Implementing the three professional growth systems for teachers, administrators, and support staff is central to building the capacity of our staff to achieve results. The development of the Professional Learning Communities Institute is another key initiative to support teaching and learning.
What are the major policy decisions that are currently being implemented?
The implementation of the Grading and Reporting policy is being phased in over a three year time period. Elementary schools were the first to implement the new policy, followed by middle schools, and then high schools. It is important for all administrators to know the Board of Education policy on Grading and Reporting.
What are the goals and aspirations of the MCPS community?
The Board of Education has identified four critical goals that are espoused by the entire MCPS community. The goals are:
Ensure success for all students
Provide an effective instructional program
Strengthen productive partnerships for education
Create a positive work environment in a self-renewing organization
What are the top tips and expectations that can help you be a successful administrator in MCPS?
The top tips to be a successful administrator include knowing the interconnectivity of relationships, processes, and results. Regarding relationships, MCPS utilizes a powerful coalition of stakeholders that include all the offices of MCPS, MCAASP, MCEA, SEIU Local 500, MCCPTA, MCR, MCBRE, and many other organizations that partner with us. Collaboration is an important skill for each administrator to exercise. Regarding processes, MCPS has embedded Baldrige continuous improvement processes through the system: in offices, in schools, and in all teams. The use of quality tools to improve processes is an expectation for all administrators. The connection of relationships and processes is done for the purpose of maximizing results. It is a hallmark of MCPS that our students achieve outstanding results. This is accomplished through the skill and hard work of our highly effective staff. It is an expectation that administrators will build the capacity of their staffs and model professional growth.
What are the diversity training opportunities to meet the needs of individuals
Diversity training opportunities are provided by the Diversity Team that resides in the Office of Organizational Development. The team has created a webpage that is accessible on the MCPS website. Training opportunities can also be accessed through the PDO system.
