- The following lessons come from the MCPS Kindergarten Writing/Handwriting instructional guide.
As stated in the MCPS Kindergarten Writing/Handwriting instructional guide:
"The goal of writing instruction in kindergarten is to provide opportunities and guidance for students to share their ideas, first verbally, and then on paper. Children have been making their marks on paper (and elsewhere long before they enter school. It is important to acknowledge that our students are writers as they enter the classroom. When the question is poses, “Who can write?” every eager hand is raised. Instruction in writing in kindergarten builds upon students’ previous experiences and willingness to share their skills in communication. A nurturing, supportive environment in a workshop setting will give students the opportunity to show what they already know about oral language and written communication and to grow in their abilities to use words and standards conventions to convey their ideas to others."
