Enduring Understanding
The choice of measurement tools depends on the measurable attribute and the degree of precision desired.
Essential Question
What estimation strategies are used in measurement?
Indicator
3.3.3.5 estimate and determine elapsed time using a clock or a calendar.
6.3 Elapsed Time
The purpose of this lesson is for students to solve elapsed time problems using clocks.
NOTES:
Determining Elapsed Time
Instruction on elapsed time should include the following types of problems.
• Finding the start time or end time using a clock face.
Example:
Show 8:30 on your clock face. This is the time school begins.
Show the time 1 hour and 20 minutes later. This is the time we go to art class.
Guide students to find the end time by counting on (hours first, then minutes).
[9:50]
• Finding the elapsed time using a clock face.
Example:
Show 10:10 on your clock face. This is the time we begin math.
If the end time is 11:50, how long is math class?
Guide students to find the elapsed time by counting hours first, then minutes.
(10:10 to 11:10 is 1 hour, 11:10 to 11:50 is 40 minutes.) [1 hour 40 minutes]
