About these videos:
- Grade 1: In this lesson, the teacher continues her instruction on how to write a friendly letter. The focus of this video segment is on scaffolding student success through small group guided writing. A group of students with similar language needs are invited to join their regular classroom teacher for a short, supportive lesson.
During the lesson, the teacher models how to plan and begin writing a letter. Conventions such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling are embedded in the modeling. Students are supported as they follow the teacher’s model and then continue with their own thoughts. The expectation is that they will successfully complete their letters independently following the small group support.
- Grade 5: In this lesson, the teacher presents a whole group mini-lesson on the writing convention of usage. Students are reminded of the past, present, and future tenses of verbs. The teacher models how to check for tense consistency in a sentence. Students are supported as they reread their own pieces of writing to check for tense consistency.
Many of the students in this class are learning English as a second language. Irregular verbs present a special challenge. The teacher supports the students with grammar usage through oral language opportunities, mini-lessons, and individual conferences. Students are also encouraged to work with partners as they apply conventions of writing.
