Cluster: Law, Government, Public Safety, and Administration

Program Description: Fire and Rescue Services/Emergency Medical Technician
Students prepare for certification in Emergency Medical Technician/Basic and Fire Fighter I/II. Students learn emergency diagnosis, treatment, and care for injuries and/or emergengy fire and rescue procedures. Final and written practical examinations are administered by Emergency Medical Services, Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. Students attend class at the Training Academy each day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students should plan for adequate travel time as they develop their class schedule.

Suggested four-year program sequence - Travel travel time is not included .This sequence satisfies the graduation requirements for:

  • completion of a career development program in Fire Science
  • program completion for the University System of Maryland

Each course in the program is taken concurrently with a field-based internship at a sponsoring fire department and supervised by MCPS staff.

To ensure rigorous preparation for both college and careers, students are encouraged to take the highest level of science, mathematics, and foreign language. Successful completion of this sequence will fulfill requirements for the University System of Maryland and completion of a career development program resulting in a dual completer program.
