Teacher of the Year Award: Guidelines and Selection Criteria

Nominee Qualifications

An active pre-K through 12th grade MCPS teacher with a commitment to closing the achievement gap clearly evident through programs designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students (with a particular emphasis on African American and Latino students).   Applicants must have at least 3 years teaching experience in the MCPS system; and should spend most of their time in a classroom setting.    All teachers, with 3 years MCPS experience are eligible, including teachers in special education, physical education, art, music, and media specialists that are teaching in their subject areas.  Guidance Counselors are not eligible.  Supervisory and non-classroom responsibilities will receive consideration.

The candidate for Teacher of the Year (nominee must be a teacher who):

  • Must be an active MCPS teacher w/3 years MCPS experience;
  • Exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled teacher;
  • Inspires students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn (especially students of color);
  • Has the respect and admiration of students - especially students of color - as well as parents and colleagues;
  • Plays an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school;
  • Is poised, articulate and possesses the energy to withstand a taxing schedule;
  • Demonstrates high motivation, initiative, integrity, leadership skills, commitment, and exceptional judgment.
  • Maintains an active role in his/her community, distinguishing himself/herself as a leader in civic, religious, or humanitarian activities;
  • Actively engages and involves parents in student development and achievement opportunities;
  • Creates an innovative, productive, purposeful learning environment;
  • Must be able to show students have demonstrated growth during a measurable time period (data based);
  • Self nominations will be accepted. 
  • Encourage all active teachers to be nominated  

Nominations must be no longer than five (5) pages and supporting document no longer than (5) pages.
