Principal of the Year Award: Guidelines and Selection Criteria

Nominee Qualifications

An active principal of a school K-12 with a commitment to closing the achievement gap clearly evident through programs designed to meet the academic and social needs of all students (witha particular emphasis on African American and Latino students), and through firmly established community ties with parents and local business and community organizations; has at least 3 years experience as principal, (of which) 2 years must be in the MCPS system; and will be an active principal during the year in which he/she will receive the award. Responsibilities related to functions beyond school administration (e.g. - central office) should be of secondary consideration.

The candidate for Principal of the Year (nominee must be a principal who):

  • Must be an active MCPS principal w/3 years experience at the principal level (of which 2 years must be in the MCPS system);
  • Strongly committed to leadership in education for all students through professional development, school improvement programs;
  • Hires highly qualified teachers and provides professional development for staff with a demonstrated interest in raising the achievement of all students while closing the achievement gap (Equity and excellence);
  • Creates a climate that fosters respect for students, colleagues, parents, and the community at large;
  • Maintains an active role in his/her community, distinguishing himself/herself as a leader in civic, religious, or humanitarian activities;
  • Actively engages and involves parents and community members in the day-to-day operation of the school, including those who are not traditionally involved;
  • Shows strong educational leadership by setting high expectations for school staff and students;
  • Creates an innovative, productive, purposeful learning environment;
  • Provides a school focus or theme related to achievement;
  • Self nominations will be accepted. 
  • Encourage all active principals to be nominated  

Nominations must be no longer than five (5) pages and supporting document no longer than (5) pages.
