MCPS Careers: Salaries

The Montgomery County community values its great public schools. The community appreciates that hard work deserves to be compensated and that our students are successful because of that hard work. So the salaries in the district are extremely competitive and among the highest in the country for public school employees. The salary schedule is bargained and increases over time.

We have three categories of employees:

Teachers

This category includes all certificated positions except administrators. A first-year teacher with no experience makes $46,400 during the 10-month school year, which increases with years of experience and successful completion of additional academic course work. A teacher with a master’s degree and 10 years of experience makes $70, 300. After 19 years and 60 credits beyond a master’s degree, that teacher will earn $103,600! In addition, there are a number of salary supplements for additional responsibilities, such as teacher leadership positions and positions supporting extracurricular activities.

Supporting Services

This group includes all noncertificated positions such as paraeducators, secretaries, building service workers, bus operators, cafeteria workers, IT staff, etc. The salary scale includes 25 grades and is increased in each grade for each year of experience, up to 10 years. The lowest salary is $11/hour and the highest is $63/hour. You will receive support for professional growth to help you advance on the salary scale.

Administrators & Supervisors

This category includes assistant principals, principals, supervisors and directors. The beginning salary for these individuals is $88,200. After 10 years in the same position that individual would make $115,000. However, because of the numerous opportunities for advancement, that individual is likely to move to other pay grades and the salary increases commensurate with responsibilities. The top of this scale is $143,600!
