MCPS Careers: Diversity
Because of our dedicated and skilled staff, we have defied the odds. Even though our demographics have changed, our student achievement has increased steadily. Eighty percent of the MCPS graduating class take the SAT and pass at significantly higher rates than the rest of the nation.
At a Glance. . .
- MCPS is the 16th largest school district in the country.
- We have 130 elementary schools, 38 middle schools, 25 high schools, 1 career and technical center and 5 special education centers.
- Our great students come from 163 countries and speak 134 languages. Over the past 10 years, the diversity of the student population has increased significantly, so it is now a “minority-majority” district.
- Twenty-six percent of our students qualify for free and reduced-price meals.
- Our students' average SAT score of 1615 is more than 100 points higher than the national average.
These students are served in our schools by employees who believe in our mission to ensure that every student succeeds. They bring a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives to their work. We value all who will commit to that mission and are up to the challenge of teaching and working in a diverse urban/suburban district. We also recognize that those who share the racial and/or socioeconomic backgrounds of the students are sometimes uniquely positioned to exemplify the possibilities for the future.
We believe that our diversity is what makes us a strong learning community for both students and adults. The variety of experiences and perspectives helps us tackle tough issues and form strong bonds as a team committed to our students’ successes. It is a great place to learn, live and work!
