What would be the total cost of a Middle Years Program for grades 9 and 10 at Seneca Valley High School? What is the total cost of adding the career IB program to Seneca Valley?

Question#: 8

ANSWER:

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a grade 6 - 10 framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. The IB Career-related Programme (CP) is designed for students interested in pursuing a career-related education in grades 11 and 12.  It provides students with a foundation to support their further studies, as well as ensure preparedness for success in the workforce. Costs for both programs vary from year-to-year based on the number of staff members requiring professional development and the IB fees charged.

To implement MYP, the cost for professional development, regardless of school size, is based on sending eight teachers to required IB training (one each in the eight IB MYP core subject areas—mathematics, language and literature, science, individuals and societies, design, language acquisition, physical education, and arts). In addition, the principal, an assistant principal, and media specialist attend the training.  Adding the MYP at Seneca Valley High School for Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 would cost $78,048 per year.  This includes a 0.6 teacher position ($48,628) for program coordination, $5,960 for substitute salaries, $12,000 for professional development travel, and $11,460 for dues, registration, and fees (costs include related employee benefits).

When CP implementation begins, the cost for professional development for the career pathway teachers is required. In addition, the diploma coordinator and principal would attend CP Coordinator and Administration training.    Adding the CP at Seneca Valley High School for FY 2019 would cost $51,795 per year.  This includes $1,915 for substitute salaries, $8,400 for professional development travel, and $1,480 for dues, registration, and fees.  The assessment fees for students enrolled in the CP total $410 per student. This includes a one-time registration fee ($172/student) and two subject exams ($119/exam). We estimate the cost of assessments for FY 2019 to total $20,500 – based on an enrollment of 50 students. In the second year of the program (FY 2020), we estimate the cost of assessments to be $41,000.  Unlike the College Board, the International Baccalaureate does not provide waivers or fee reductions for students with financial need.
