What is the cost to bring down the student to counselor ratio from 800 to 600 (elementary schools)?

Question#: 27

ANSWER:

For FY 2017, counselors, staff development teachers, reading specialist, and media specialists are allocated to schools based on enrollment and FARMS.  Schools determined which of these positions are staffed at 1.0 FTE and which are staffed at 0.5 FTE based on school priorities and needs.  Additional, elementary counselor positions are allocated to schools based on the following guidelines:

  • An additional 0.5 counselor is allocated to non-focus schools with projected Grades K-5 enrollment > 800 students.
  • An additional 0.5 counselor is allocated to focus schools with projected Grades K-5 enrollment > 700 students.
  • An additional 0.5 counselor is allocated to Title I schools with projected Grades K-5 enrollment > 600 students.

If the guidelines were changed to give each elementary school with projected Grades K-5 enrollment greater than 600 students an additional 1.0 elementary counselor position, it would require an additional 41.0 elementary counselor positions at a cost of $4,016,688 (including employee benefits).
