CLASSIFICATION OF SCHOOLS
For the purpose of parity in competition, every two years the MPSSAA will
divide schools into four classifications based upon enrollment in grades
9-11. The next reclassification will occur after the 2008–09 school
year. Enrollment figures for MCPS schools below include grades 9-11,
calculated in October, 2006.

Open Regional Tournaments
The MPSSAA conducts "Open” Regional Tournaments in the following
sports: Field Hockey, Soccer, Girls’ Volleyball, Basketball, Lacrosse,
Softball, and Baseball.
Teams desiring to participate in the open regional tournament must submit
an application to the MPSSAA. The process and entry deadlines are different
for different sports. Coaches must refer to the appropriate MPSSAA Tournament
Bulletin (Fall, Winter, or Spring) for procedures, information, and deadlines.
Coaches and athletic directors are responsible for completing applications
precisely as prescribed for each sport.
Seeding in Open Regional Tournaments
There are no win-loss requirements for entry into the "Open Tournament." All
teams qualify provided they play the minimum number of games required and they
submit their entries on time. The top-four teams in each region will
be seeded according to the highest winning percentage. All other teams
will be randomly drawn into the remaining bracket locations.
All regional games will be played at the site of the school with the lower
numbered line position unless a specific alternative plan or neutral site has
been submitted by the regional tournament director and has been approved by
the MPSSAA executive director.
