The rapid increase in both
the number of sports and the number of participants
has created a shortage of officials and referees for
Montgomery County High School athletic contests. MCPS,
along with the various sports commissioners are encouraging
local residents to consider becoming an official. Officiating
athletic events can be a very rewarding experience;
you can set your own hours and work days, the pay (which
varies by sport) is good and you can help make sure
no high school contest is canceled due to lack of officials.
To become an official, here's a short list of important
considerations:
- good officials are familiar with the sport they
choose
- good officials are willing to learn the current
rules
(you will receive instruction on rules, so you don't
have to be an expert!)
- good officials like
to work with people
Each officiating board (by sport) has its own rules
and regulations, so you would need to contact
the various commissioners to get more information.
Some officials
boards offer training and 'provisional' certification
to help get you started. If you would like to
become an official or have any questions, please contact
one of the sport
commissioners and they can either
help
you or let you know where to get help.
