Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) includes
thirty eight middle schools, grades six through eight,
with a total middle school enrollment of over 29,000
students. The middle school athletic program consists
of three seasons and includes: boys’ and girls’ softball,
and co-ed cross country in the fall; boys’ and
girls’ basketball in the winter; and boys’ and
girls’ soccer in the spring. Seventh and eighth
grade students who meet the MCPS eligibility requirements
are eligible to participate in the middle school
athletic program.
The Montgomery County Middle School Principals Association,
comprised of the 38 middle school principals, is
the governing body of the middle school athletic
program. The program is administered by Gabriele
von Nordheim, athletics specialist.
Each middle school has an athletic coordinator who
supervises and administers the school athletic program.
The interscholastic athletic program is a planned
extension of the middle school physical education
and intramural programs. Its primary purpose is to
provide an opportunity for advanced skill development
for all students with interests and/or talents in
athletics.
