International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB)

Program Description Students will have the opportunity to:

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a demanding two-year international program that meets the needs of highly motivated Grade 11 and 12 students and leads to a qualification that is recognized by leading universities around the world. To earn an IB diploma, students must take a challenging liberal arts course of studies and pass examinations in six academic subjects. In addition, students are required to take the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that investigates the nature of knowledge in various disciplines; participate in 150 hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), undertake original research, and write an Extended Essay of 4,000 words. Students successfully completing the program earn a MCPS diploma and a Montgomery County Certificate of Merit, in addition to the internationally recognized IB diploma.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program at Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS (BCC) is available to students attending BCC who meet academic requirements and are interested in pursuing a rigorous pre-university course of study.

All students who attend BCC can participate in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in grades 9 and 10 even if they did not participate in MYP in middle school.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program at Richard Montgomery High School is a countywide program for students who meet academic requirements and are interested in pursuing a rigorous pre-university course of studies.

This program is open to applicants from all high school clusters in the county. Admission to the Richard Montgomery high School International Baccalaureate Program is very competitive. Criteria used to evaluate candidates include teacher recommendations, written statements from candidates, previous grades, coursework, and test scores.

All students who attend Richard Montgomery can participate in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in grades 9 and 10 even if they did not participate in MYP in middle school.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program at Springbrook HS serves students in the Northeast Consortium (NEC) who meet academic requirements and are interested in pursuing a rigorous pre-university course of study.

Students who enter Springbrook through the NEC Choice process may self-select to participate in the IB Program. Sherwood High School students are also eligible to attend Springbrook if they plan to participate in the IB program. (Transportation is provided for students transferring from Sherwood through central location stops only.)
