Language immersion is an educational approach in which students are taught the curriculum content through the medium of a second language. In this way, immersion students not only learn the content, but also gain knowledge of the language in which it is taught. In total immersion programs, children learn their entire core subjects (reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science) in the second language. Partial immersion programs are based on the same principle, but only a portion of the curriculum is taught in the second language. The main difference between an immersion setting and a foreign language class is the approach to second language learning. In an immersion program, language is a method for teaching the content rather than the subject of instruction.

Immersion: Spanish (Partial)
Admission to the Foreign Language Immersion Programs is limited. Selection for the programs is based on a lottery system for students in kindergarten and Grade 1 if requests exceed available program capacity. Admission for all other grades is determined by language proficiency and available space. Multiple birth siblings requesting the same program will be treated as a single request. Change of school assignment requests for younger siblings will be given preference provided that the older sibling will also be in the program.
Please contact the local school to find out about the application process and deadlines. Students who live outside of the local school attendance area must complete a Change of School Assignment (COSA) form, available online or at your home school.
Burnt Mills Elementary School’s Spanish Immersion Program is available to transfer students by lottery only for seats not filled by Burnt Mills Elementary students, followed by the students from the other elementary schools in the Key Middle School feeder pattern.
