Một số chương trình có số chỗ giới hạn đòi hỏi các học sinh phài nạp đơn và hội đủ một số tiêu chuẩn để được nhận vào. Việc này có thể bao gồm một đơn ghi danh viết tay hay những giấy tờ như một hồ sơ cá nhân. Một số chương trình nhận đơn của học sinh khắp quận, trong khi một số khác chỉ nhận đơn của học sinh từ những vùng đã được chỉ định trong quận. Những chương trình này được gọi là “application programs.”
