Application Programs: News, Forms, and Deadlines

Some competitive programs with a limited number of seats require that students complete an application and meet specific admissions criteria. This may include a written application or the submission of additional materials such as a portfolio.  Some programs accept applications countywide, while others accept applications from designated regions of the county. They are called “application programs.”

For Grade 3 Students

Documents and information  

During the 2017-2018 school year, all Grade 3 students will be centrally reviewed for potential candidacy for the CES rather than parents submitting an application.  MCPS offers both regional and local programs.  All Grade 3 students will be considered for a regional CES program, which is based on their address, unless they attend a school that houses a local program.  A parent information meeting will be offered in November and January and the central review process will occur after second marking period.
  • Elementary schools that currently house a regional program include Lucy V. Barnsley, Chevy Chase, Clearspring, Cold Spring, Dr. Charles R. Drew, Fox Chapel, and Pine Crest/Oak View.

  • Elementary schools that currently house a local program include:  Rachel Carson, Piney Branch, Spark Matsunaga, and Stonegate.

For Grade 5 Students

Middle School Magnet Program and Admissions Information

Roberto Clemente Middle School Programs:

  • Information Meeting:  October 12, 7 pm at Roberto Clemente Middle School
  • Application forms & sample test questions for current Grade 5 students eligible for programs at Roberto Clemente Middle School (high school clusters: Clarksburg, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Magruder, Northwest, Poolesville, Quince Orchard, Seneca Valley, or Watkins Mill
  • Timeline and FAQs
  • Magnet test date is January 6, 2018 at Clemente MS
  • Due date for application is November 3, 2017

Eastern and Takoma Park Middle Schools Programs:

  • Information Meeting VIDEO and PowerPoint presentation (from October 12, 7:30 p.m., Montgomery Blair High School Auditorium)
  • BOE was updated that both Eastern and Takoma Park MS will be part of a middle school magnet field test*
  • Current MCPS Grade 5 students who are part of these schools admission feeder* will be centrally reviewed -- NO application necessary
  • Timeline and FAQs
  • Magnet test will be in early January.  More information will be available around mid-October.
  • Parents of these MCPS Grade 5 families* will receive a letter with details of the process in October

For Grade 8 Students

Documents and information for 2018-2019 school year

Helpful Testing Information for Grade 8 Applicants:

  • Grade 8 applicants have alternative options for testing should they require a different location.
    • Applicants are assigned a location for testing based on their home high school, (see application, page 4).
    • If an applicant is unable to get to the suggested testing location, they may call one of the three magnet programs to arrange to take the test at another location -- Poolesville HS: 240-740-2419; Richard Montgomery HS: 301-610-8100; Blair HS: 301-649-8240.  (This is necessary to ensure materials are available at each test site location)
  • NEW THIS YEAR –MCPS bus transportation is being provided from Clarksburg, Seneca Valley, and Watkins Mill high schools for any student needing a ride to Poolesville HS on Saturday, December 2.  (CORRECTION: Gaithersburg and Magruder clusters test at Richard Montgomery HS.  See page 4 of application.)
    • A bus will depart each school promptly at 7:00 AM to get to Poolesville HS by 7:45 to ensure students are seated for testing by 8 AM.
    • The bus will return students to the original high school location at the conclusion of testing; departing around 11:00 AM.
    • Families are responsible for arranging a ride home from the five locations.
    • If interested, reserve your seat no later than Monday, Nov. 27 by contacting the Poolesville Magnet Coordinator @ 240-740-2419.
    • Make-up testing is provided for students who are unable to test on Saturday. Students may test on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Richard Montgomery High School.  Written requests for the alternate test date must be submitted to the program coordinator with the application. A telephone contact from the coordinator will confirm testing on this alternate date.
