Summative Performance Assessment
for Integrated Learning Experiences 1 - 4

Kindergarten

NOTE: With this recycling unit, there are many opportunities to do summative performance assessments. Here is an example that you could use whether or not your class creates a recycling social setting.

Say to the children:

"You know some of the things we recycle in our room. (Mention several examples.) But what if a new student were to join our class? What can we do so he/she would know how to recycle?" (Children will begin to suggest drawing pictures, writing rules, assigning a buddy.)

"Let's use your idea of creating rules. What would be some rules?" (Have students make suggestions and record on board.)

Then allow students to work in pairs or small groups. They are to choose a rule they would like to draw. Write their rules on their papers as they decide which ones they are going to illustrate.

When completed, have students share their work and explain their rules. Using the decision-making process, determine what they will do with them.

As the recycling center is being designed and as children interact in this setting, there will be opportunities to do a performance assessment. Observe the children thinking, working, and interacting as they role play the jobs of workers and visitors in the recycling center. As you (the teacher) observe your students, be cognizant of:
