Spray Plantation, Near the St. Mary's River, Maryland, l661

A Successful Plantation

Master Spray feels that he has done well in the nine years since he first planted himself and his family in the Maryland colony. He has little time for anything other than providing food, tending his house and farm, and raising tobacco. But he thinks he has a better life than if he had stayed in England.

He has improved the value of his farm by clearing, planting, and fencing land and building a fine home and barn.

He owns more cattle, hogs and chickens.

He is able to buy a few more comforts for his family each year.

He is addressed with respect by his fellow planters.

If he continues to work hard and stay healthy he thinks he and his plantation will continue to prosper.
