Spray Plantation, Near the St. Mary's River, Maryland, l661

 Most Goods Come From England

Most of the goods the Sprays own are purchased from England with tobacco crop profits. The family makes few items on their own. It is more profitable for workers to grow tobacco in Maryland, sell it in English markets and pay for imported goods. The more tobacco Master Spray can produce, the greater will be his profits. He wants his workers to spend their time raising tobacco instead of producing other goods.

 Maryland tobacco is shipped

and sold to buy English goods

that are brought back to Maryland.
