Packing Hogsheads for Shipping When the tobacco leaves are dry, they are stripped from their stalks and tied into a fan-shaped bunch, called a hand. The hands are tightly packed into barrels called hogsheads. A hogshead measures about 43 inches high and about twenty-seven inches across. It weighs about 400 pounds when packed.
