Spray Plantation   Near the St. Mary's River, Maryland, l661

 Indentured Servant

Mary, an indentured servant, cuts herbs in the garden. She is recovering from an illness she caught when she arrived in Maryland six months ago. During their first year in the colony, nearly all newcomers get sick.

Mary tells how she decided to come to Maryland when she was fifteen years old. She signed an indenture form. Master Spray paid for her trip from England to Maryland and provides her food, clothing and shelter. In turn, she agreed to work for him for ten to fourteen hours a day, six days a week, for four years. When her indenture is up, she will be free to marry and start her own household.
