      Meat is roasted on a spit turned over a fire. The spit is an iron bar that extends between the two L-shaped legs in the fireplace. The bar rests on hooks and can be moved closer to or further from the heat of the fire. In the background, cornbread bakes in a covered pot resting on hot ashes.
